What is a non-VoIP number?

A non-VoIP number is a phone number a mobile carrier issued to a real SIM card, the same kind of number as on an ordinary phone. Sites and apps that check the number type at sign-up accept it, while many refuse VoIP (internet) numbers. That's why non-VoIP numbers are used to receive verification codes.

Non-VoIP and VoIP numbers

A VoIP number comes from an internet calling provider and works over a data connection, in an app or a browser. It's cheap to get and easy to create many of, so it's useful for calls and texts with people, and treated with suspicion by sign-up forms.

A non-VoIP number belongs to a mobile carrier and a physical SIM card. To the outside world it looks like anyone's phone number, because it is one.

Why apps reject VoIP numbers

When you type a number into a sign-up form, many services look up its type in carrier databases. If the answer is "VoIP", the form refuses it or the code is never sent. They do it to cut down on fake and bulk accounts, and it catches honest users who just want to keep their own number private.

When you need one, and when you don't

  • You need one to sign up or verify where internet numbers are refused, while keeping your personal number out of the account.
  • You need one for a business or creator profile you want kept apart from your private phone.
  • You don't need one to call and text people: a VoIP number with calls and texts in the browser is cheaper for that.

One-time code or rental?

A one-time number receives one code from the service you picked. If no code arrives before the timer ends, it's refunded automatically.

A rental keeps the same number for 1 day up to a year and receives every text from that service. Choose a rental for any account you'll keep: apps often send a new code when you sign in on another device, and that code goes to the number you signed up with.

How it works at VerifDoc

  1. 01Create a free account and add balance with crypto.
  2. 02In SMS Verification, pick the app or site. You see the live price and how many numbers are in stock.
  3. 03Enter the number in the app. The code shows in your dashboard, usually within seconds; for services that call with the code, the call rings in your browser.

What's allowed

Use numbers for your own accounts and follow the terms of the services you sign up with. Fraud, and creating fake or bulk accounts, aren't allowed, and accounts that do it are closed.

Questions

Is a non-VoIP number the same as a burner number?

Not quite. "Burner" usually means a throwaway number for calls. A non-VoIP number is about the number type: it's a real carrier mobile number, which is what verification forms check for.

Can I use the number from outside the US?

Yes. The numbers are US mobile numbers, but the codes show in your dashboard in the browser, so you can use them from anywhere.

Can I keep the same number?

Rent it. A rental keeps the number for the length you choose, from 1 day to 1 year, and every text from that service reaches you.

Are free "receive SMS online" sites the same thing?

No. Those numbers are shared and their codes are shown publicly, so anyone can read them, and most services have long since blocked them.
